During the hiring process you should look for someone who’s punctual, outgoing, professional, organized, friendly, and has a desire for all things beauty. You may need to ask some tougher questions regarding customer service. “On the fly” exercises are a great way to assess your candidate and how they would interact with a customer. A simple idea is to have your candidate “sell” you a product or two that they are passionate about. This can give you a better idea of what type of salesperson they are and how they would appeal to the customer.
Remember beauty managers, knowledge about products can always be taught, but we should look for an employee who has a natural passion for the industry and for assisting others.
Here are some tips to help with your hiring process:
Note if the candidate is on time for the interview, punctuality is key and a must to operate a business successfully.
Notice how they greet you when first meeting you, being professional and friendly is a must-have in the beauty industry. We want our customers to feel welcomed and cared for.
Body language is important! Notice if your candidate has open or closed off body language, this says a lot about how they will engage and interact with staff and customers.
Ask your client hypothetical questions about tough situations that may happen in the workplace. This will show you a candidate's thought process during uncertain times, and ability to navigate and work through customer service or workplace issues.
Always ask your potential candidate to give you an example of a difficult experience they had in a work atmosphere, and how they turned the situation around!
When concluding your interview, you always want to ask your candidate how they are feeling, if they have any questions for you, and let them know that you will reach out to them for a follow up on the interview once you have met all of your prospective candidates. Thank them for coming to the interview, you want to keep it very light hearted and friendly to wrap up the interview!
